How can you offer Free Hosting?
The service is paid for by revenue from selling advertising space
Do You Offer On-line Editing?
Web1000 does not at this time have an online HTML editor. The Web1000 Directors are considering adding one at a later date. In the mean time, you may be interested in the following links:
http://transload.starblvd.net
http://www.submitside.com/HTMLeditor
Please keep a copy of your site on your hard drive.
Do my pages become your property?
No. We don't claim any rights to the content of your site.
What is your policy on Copyrighted material?
In order to have copyrighted materials of any length or type on our servers, i.e.: music, artwork, photos, literature, you must be able to provide documentation from the copyright holder authorizing you to distribute their material over our servers. We are fully Digital Millenium Copyright Act compliant. Our policy is to fully cooperate with any investigation of copyright infringement -- including providing all information in our possession to the investigating party. For details, click here.
Registration
Can I change or correct a domain name once it has been registered?
Once a Domain Name or Subdomain Name have been selected, the name cannot be changed. You will need to cancel the existing subdomain and re-register for the subdomain you want.
To cancel the name, go to the support area at http://web1000.com/support/
You can then go to www.web1000.com and register a Subdomain name choice.
Do you support Foreign Domain names?
Web1000 is capable of supporting any domain names that currently exist under any system, including .tv, .co.uk, and any others.
Supported Services
Do you provide basic site construction and coding support?
We're afraid that assisting subscribers with the actual construction and coding of their websites is beyond the scope of our technical support group.
For basic instructions on all aspects of web page construction, look through the major search engines (Yahoo, Lycos, etc.) for tutorial sites. There are many excellent sites on the web that can help you learn to do just about anything you want to on your website.
We have also recommended several online resources, software applications, and books in our webmaster's resources section of our web site to help you get started. You can find them at http://www.web1000.com/support/webmast.htm.
Also, many local & community colleges offer classes in related subjects.
More resources for web developers:
The Web Developer's Virtual Library
The HTML Station
C|Net
Builder.com
Web Monkey
Developer.com
The WWW Consortium (W3C)
Yahoo! Computers & Internet
Do you provide mail services?
Yes, but only for fully qualified domain names. Thus, if you own your own domain name (i.e. myname.com, myname.tv, etc), you can get mail forwarding at http://mail.web1000.com.
Do you support secured E-Commerce?
We encourage customers to use their site in any legal way they wish, including for E-Commerce. However, we do not provide any of those support services.
Do you support Front Page extensions, publishing, operating systems, databases?
We do not support FrontPage Extensions or publishing at this time. Publishing has some security flaws and so it hasn't been ramped up to protect our customers' security. Company directors are reviewing this issue so it may change in the future.
You may create databases for your site within your site's directory. Each user is allowed their own cgi-bin to run their applications from. There is no external support available for your databases.
Do you provide internet access dial-up accounts?
We do not offer dial up accounts to access the internet. You will need to use your own ISP for internet access.
Errors, Bugs and Fixes
I am unhappy with the way that banners display.
We use a sophisticated filtering system to avoid displaying banners in a way that would interfere with the layout of customer sites. If you use framesets, the only banners your site should get will be popups. Otherwise, you will get either banners, pop-ups, or a mix. Currently, we use cookies to limit the number of banners a customer sees to two in any hour. If your customers are not able to use cookies, they will see more banners. You can also change the kind of banner being displayed by visiting http://web1000.com/support.
I am receiving odd errors.
We use an aggresive filtering system to keep our bandwidth use to a level that allows us to display the fewest possible banners on your site, and still keep paying the bills. When our overall bandwidth use is high, we take serveral steps, including: Aggresively preventing people from hotlinking images, movies, and other large files from third party sites; blocking sites from serving overly large files that will bring the site into a situation where the ratio of bytes served to html pages served is too large; and blocking sites from serving certain file types associated with hotlinking and other activity prohibited by our terms of services. Because we use cookies to determine some of these parameters, and we assume the worst case when cookies cannot be used, customers who are unable to accept cookies will find these limitations to be imposed with greater frequency than other customers.
I am receiving 404 errors
Error 404 occurs when a server or web page (which stores the information you want) cannot be found. The following are possible reasons for this error, and things you can try to resolve the problem.
- The URL was entered incorrectly.
Make sure you have correctly entered the URL location. Every character, including case, is meaningful.
- The web page to which you are trying to connect, does not exist.
Log a Support Request Ticket.
I am receiving 500 or 501 errors.
This refers to a script error. To resolve the problem, follow these steps:
- The script must be in the correct directory on the web site. All scripts should reside in the cgi-bin sub-directory of your web site.
- The script permissions must be set for "executable"
- Verify the files were uploaded using the correct Transfer Type:
- If none of above actions can correct the error, there may be a problem with the script.
I am receiving 401 errors.
The Web Site permissions are not set to allow access. To resolve the problem, the Webmaster must update file permissions on his/her web site.
Wsaehost Unreach - No Route to Host.
This is an error that FTP Voyager gives when it can't find our servers. This could be due to a couple of things; Our servers could be down or being maintained, there could be too much traffic on the FTP servers at once, or your ISP is not connecting to us. Hang up and try again later. Usually this error happens when our servers have too much traffic or are being worked on. If you can't get on at all for 2 days in a row call our network status number and see if our network is down. If our network is up and you still can't get in, contact your ISP and see if they are dropping your connection.
95% of the time someone sees this error, it is working within a couple of hours.
Some users have also experienced success by switching from FTP Voyager to WS_FTP.
"Directory Listing Denied"
When you see that error message, the server is telling the browser that it can't find your home page. Make sure your home page is at the 'top' or 'root' of your FTP directory and that it is named 'default.htm'. The server will also look for a page called 'index' if it can't find your default.htm page. Acceptable file extensions are *.htm or *.html.
"Site Under Construction" pulls up when I go to my webpage.
The default page that our servers will look for is default.htm. You will need to delete the existing default.htm (the 'under construction' page you are seeing) in your directory and rename your "home" page to default.htm or index.htm.
"Request Timed Out"
Your browser will stop attempting to connect to a server after a set amount of time. You will get this error if you exceed that time limit when trying to connect to a server. Possible reasons for this are:
- Internet Traffic Problem. Too many people are trying to connect to this location at one time. Try accessing the site at other times during day to see if this makes a difference.
- You may be having problems with your PPP or SLIP dial-in connection. Contact your ISP Dial-Up Provider.
"Server Not Found"
You get these messages when your computer cannot find the server you are trying to connect to. There are several possible reasons for this error message:
- Your system may be behind a security firewall, prohibiting you from accessing the outside world. Contact your System Administrator for authorization
- The URL was entered incorrectly. Make sure you have correctly entered the URL location. Every character, including the case, is meaningful.
- Web site is not registered with InterNIC.
- The server has changed locations.
- The server to which you are trying to link is down or experiencing networking problems.
- The server to which you are trying to link does not exist.
Java Script Errors.
I'm afraid that we do not provide code-level debugging support - your site's content and code functionality are your responsibility. JavaScript executes client-side (nothing executes on the server) and is totally server-independent. The only thing that could be interfering with your script is the advertising code we insert, which is almost never in conflict with customer JavaScript.
530 not logged in, Home directory does not exist.
This error indicates that there has been a problem in the registration process. Open a support ticket in Web1000 support with the error message and we will fix the problem for you.
FTP
What is FTP?
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a system used for transferring files between computers on the Internet. It is commonly used for downloading software from the Internet. This is the process you will be using to upload your web pages to our server.
Can I use Anonymous FTP?
Currently, we do not support anonymous FTP. However, you can make links to the files through your website and have downloads occur over HTTP. In fact, if you download from more than one IP address at the same time (i.e. two different people log into your site via FTP with your password and download files), your site will be permanently disabled from downloading files via FTP.
Do you offer Telnet access?
We do not currently offer Telnet access. Your tar files cannot be decompressed in your Web1000 directory. The tar files must first be decompressed on your local hard drive and then uploaded to your Web1000 directory.
Can I FTP pages from another hosting service directly to Web1000?
If you need to transfer files from a previous host to Web1000 but don't have a copy of your site on your hard drive, you may be interested in a utility called Leap FTP. Leap FTP is an FTP utility that will get your web site from your previous host and transfer it to We1000. You can download the utility from the LeapWare site at: http://www.leapware.com.
Please be advised that Leap FTP is not one of the Web1000 supported FTP clients so we will not be able to help you use or learn this application.
Web1000 recommends that you always have a backup copy of your website on your local machine.
I can't upload with Composer or FrontPage.
The "Direct Publish" features of Netscape Composer and MS FrontPage are not supported due to a security hole in the programs. You will need to use a stand alone FTP client to upload your files. We support the following utilities:
| Macintosh: |
Fetch
|
| Windows: |
FTP Voyager
WS_FTP
|
If you need help setting up your FTP client, we have tutorials on setting up your account with WS_FTP, FTP Voyager or Fetch at tutorials.web1000.com.
I cannot download when using FTP
If you download from more than one IP address at the same time (i.e. two different people log into your site via FTP with your password and download files), your site will be permanently disabled from downloading files via FTP.
How to FTP from a DOS Command prompt:
- At the DOS Command prompt, go to the directory your files reside in and enter ftp ftp.web1000.com to FTP into your Web Site.
- When prompted, enter your user name and password.
- When you see the ftp> prompt, you are logged into the FTP server.
- Type ls -l to list all available directories.
- To access a directory, type cd directoryname
- Type bin to set the transfer mode to binary NOTE: The default transfer mode in FTP is ASCII Text. You must set the transfer mode to binary if the file is anything other than a standard ASCII text file (i.e. .gif or .jpg files)
- To UPLOAD a file, type put filename.extension and hit enter
- To DOWNLOAD a file, type get filename.extension and hit enter
- When the transfer is complete type quit at the ftp> prompt.
- Additional commands that may be helpful:
- pwd - print the current working directory.
- mget/mput: mget and mput allow you to move multiple files at once.
- They also allow you to use an '*' for matching filenames, just like you can in DOS.
- prompt: Also helpful in use with mput/mget. prompt - mput/mget will normally ask you if you want to put/get each file that you select on the command line. You can turn this functionality on or off with the prompt command.

HTML Coding
What are the homepage naming options?
Your home page, the main/first page of your website, should have one of the following file names: default.htm , index.htm , default.html , or index.html.
You must remember to DELETE the default.htm file Web1000 adds to your site or it will override your home page.
Why do I see an "Under Construction" page?
The reason you're home page isn't showing up as the default page in your web directory is because the server is set to recognize 'default.htm' as the home page for every site. 'Default.htm' is the page you are seeing that says; "Under Construction, etc."
To fix this, first DELETE the existing 'default.htm' document that is currently in your directory (the 'Under Construction' page), then RENAME your 'home' page to default.htm or default.html or index.htm or index.html. The 'default.htm' page will be disabled automatically a couple of weeks after your site has been created.

Real Audio and Video
Web1000 does not currently support any streaming media via dedicated servers, although any streaming media type that works correctly via regular http download should work on Web1000.
MP3 copyright
There is no reason that you cannot have your music on your band's website. You should be able to distribute your music via the Internet.
It's recommend that you supply a text document called COPYRIGHT.TXT in your directory with the following information for each MP3 file, the title, origin and copyright information. This will protect you from someone using your material and from inappropriate cancellation.
Scripting
Do you support Sendmail?
Sendmail is a UNIX based mail program. Currently we do not support mail services from our site.
Do you support Dynamic HTML?
This is not a server-side issue, but a browser issue. Dynamic HTML is a Microsoft standard and currently IE 4.0 is the only Dynamic HTML-compatible browser. So, if you are planning to use Dynamic HTML, you should also include a non-Dynamic HTML page link as well.
Do you support SSL?
We do not support SSL at this time.
Do you support CGI and Perl?
Perl is supported on Web1000. Be advised that not all perl scripts are compatible with our service. NOTE: Perl and CGI are currently being fixed, so they may be unavailable or in Beta testing until further notice.
Do you support ASP?
